A moving and eloquent novel about love, grief, renewal - and the powerful language of flowers. Ruby Jewell knows flowers. In her 20 years as a florist, she has stood behind the counter at the Flower Shoppe with her faithful dog, Clementine, resting at her feet. A customer can walk in, and with just a glance or a few words, Ruby can throw together the perfect arrangement for any occasion.

Whether intended to rekindle a romance, mark a celebration, offer sympathy, or heal a broken heart, her expressive floral designs mark the moments and milestones in the lives of her neighbors. It's as though she knows just what they want to say, just what they need. Yet Ruby's own heart's desires have gone ignored since the death of her beloved sister. It will take an invitation from a man who's flown to the moon, the arrival of a unique little boy, and concern from a charming veterinarian to reawaken her wounded spirit. Any life can be derailed, but the healing power of community can put it right again.

The Art of Arranging Flowers (Audible Audio Edition) Lynne Branard Xe Sands Ideal Audiobooks Books Reviews

The Art of Arranging Flowers was a novel about Ruby Jewell, a florist for 20 years in a small western town. Ruby had known grief in her life an alcoholic mother, a father who left, and the death of her grandmother and her sister of cancer. Slowly, by meeting people through her floral shop, she opened herself to relationships with others. This was a much better book than I expected, although I know nothing of most of the flowerswith which she made her bouquets.
I would have given this book a 4 1/2 star rating but didn't know how to do a half star. The story started out slow for me. I got bogged down in the author's wordy descriptions a couple of times toward the beginning and if this had not been a book club book, I might have put it down. So glad I didn't! Very inspiring story! If you are reading this review, I sincerely urge you to read it!
This was a sweet story that I did enjoy, and there were good messages in the relationships of the storyline. I have relished reading Ms. Hinton/Branard's novels in the past and eagerly looked forward to this new novel. The beginning of the novel grabbed my attention, and I was especially fond of the astronaut character, who was interesting and woven well into the story. This novel would make a great beach read; however, for me, it does not have the gravitas of Lynne Hinton's (Branard) previous novels The Last Odd Day and The Arms of God. These two books are in my library for good!!
Reading this book was like chatting with a friend while sharing a cup of tea. A pleasant read, and a sweet story. Fairly long, but that was great for me, because I'd read a chapter or two before turning out the lights for bed. Good way to wind down each night.
The main character is a florist with her own shop. Her gift is how she intuitively knows what sort of arrangement works best for the people she makes the arrangements for, and she knows them all in her longtime hometown.
The real story is the details of all the characters' lives, and the magic is derived from how well the book is written.
Ruby has an uncanny ability to create floral masterpieces that specifically tailor to the personality and likes of the recipient. She has sworn off love due to her past experiences. Put together small town USA flower shop, trusty canine companion, gutsy female employee, small boy looking for an after school job, astronaut who needs a date for a presidential dinner, new veterinarian in town looking for a home, busybody gossip, gay male fashion adviser and you have a whopper of a tale. Will she fall for the moon walker or the man who saves her pet? This book is a quick read and beautifully written. My thanks to the author and Netgalley for a complimentary copy.
This is a thoughtful character driven story that includes the wide reaching premise of love......There is love between a woman and her most faithful companion, young love affected by serious illness, the 'love' between friends and the family we make with friends, co-workers, and neighbors, and a developing romantic relationship. My only criticism is the relationship between Ruby and John could have been expanded. It seemed to leap from looking at each other to well..... .

That said, I believe this book will appeal to a large variety of age groups and I for one like to read about a more 'mature' main character. (Ruby is in her mid forties) who has some life experiences that shape her views of the world. I will look for more stories by Ms. Branard, and I think this one is a winner! I also learned a LOT about flowers!!
Ruby Jewell owns the flower shop in a small town called Creekside and she knows almost everyone in town. She adores flowers and she has some very good friends who work with her but she has never been married or really attached to anyone until a famous astronaut moves to town and starts teaching her some amazing things. She is such a likeable character. I'm a florist myself so I loved all the descriptions of her bouquets.
